Morly Grey - The Only Truth (1972)

Morly Grey fue un grupo estadounidense de heavy psych formado en 1969 en Alliance, Ohio, la cual sacó un solo álbum en 1972 con el título de "The Only Truth" que hoy estoy reseñando para ustedes, el cual en los 80's y 90's se convirtió en un disco muy buscado por los coleccionistas por su estado de rareza, después fue re-editado varias veces en forma de bootleg, incluyendo la de Akarma que tenía una calidad muy mala de sonido debido a que era un transfer de un LP o un Cassette al parecer, finalmente en el 2009 Sundazed editó por primera vez de manera oficial el disco, incluyendo unos bonus tracks que no sé de donde salieron.

Morly Grey ha tenido tres encarnaciones, la primera donde había un segundo guitarrista y finalmente las dos últimas que fueron las que grabaron el álbum y la última que tuvo un cambio de nombre (The Roller Bros Band) y grabaron un segundo disco además de uno en vivo, pero no fueron editados ninguno de los dos por lo que sé. Después esta alineación se juntó en los 90's y grabaron un nuevo disco, pero también permanece inédito. El grupo abrió para bandas y solistas como Bob Seger, los Platters, Brownsville Station, Mitch Ryder, Cactus, Wolfman Jack entre otros.

"The Only Truth" es un disco de heavy psych con algunas influencias directas del garage de los 60's, además de estar influenciados por Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Nazz entre otros, de corte similar al de otros grupos de la época como Top Drawer, The Damnation of Adam Blessing, Joshua, The Third Power, Mason, Bolder Damn, Fat y sí, Samuel Prody. Sin embargo, el álbum ha sido mal-etiquetado por los vendedores del internet y los coleccionistas snobs como "progresivo", a pesar de que el sonido del grupo no tenga nada que ver con ese subgénero del rock e incluso alguna vez leí que decían que el sonido de Morly Grey se adelantaba al sonido del conjunto inglés Yes, cosa que está absolutamente errónea, pues Yes habían debutado desde 1969, además de que estos últimos sí son 100% progresivos, mientras que este power trio gringo parece estar más enraizado en los trios sesenteros como Cream, Hendrix Experience y Blue Cheer e incluso en grupos como los Who, The Nazz, Grateful Dead y Quicksilver Messenger Service.

Morly Grey nos ofrecen temas que van desde lo garajero al estilo del grupo de Tod Rundgren (Peace Offer), a las canciones con toques country que nos recordaran a Top Drawer o a Grateful Dead (You Came to Me), a reminiscencias de Pete Towshend y los Quién (Who Can I Say You Are), riffs Hendrixianos (I'm Afraid) etc. Y finalmente a los temas de muy larga duración que se pusieron de moda con el surgimiento de Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service y Iron Butterfly (The Only Truth), que creo que por este tema viene la errónea reputación de que este álbum es de progresivo, debido a que incluye algunas flautas, cambios de ritmo y hasta solos de batería.

Un extraordinario disco sin duda alguna, para mi gusto de lo mejor que pudo ofrecernos la escena heavy psicodélica de estados unidos.
